BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Defending national champion Ohio State opens the new season tonight against the only school to beat the Buckeyes last season, Virginia Tech. A year ago in Columbus, the visiting Hokies won 35-21 and tonight's game is in Blacksburg, Virginia. Following that loss, Ohio State won its last 13 games to clinch the national championship.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Running back James Conner of the Pitt Panthers will miss the rest of the 2015 season after tearing the MCL in his right knee during Saturday's win over Youngstown State. Connor, who is the reigning ACC Player of the Year, ran for a pair of early touchdowns against the Penguins before tweaking the knee on a carry early in the second quarter.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Just how much does Matt Harvey have left in his pitching arm? Mets general manager Sandy Alderson says Harvey, who is in his first season since Tommy John surgery, won't pitch beyond 180 innings in the regular season unless needed in the final series against Washington in early October. Alderson says he has talked with surgeon James Andrews and Harvey but not Harvey's agent yet.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Titans have re-signed tight end Chase Coffman just a day after releasing him. To make room on the roster, they placed rookie running back David Cobb on injured reserve designated to return.
NEW YORK (AP) — This is the eighth day of play at the U.S. Open. In the lone result so far involving a seeded player, women's 20th-seed Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) defeated American Varvara Lepchenko, 6-3, 6-4. Coming up, men's No. 2 Roger Federer is facing American John Isner (IHZ'-nur), the 13th-seed.
