ROSZKE, Hungary (AP) — Several hundred Arabs, Asians and Africans have broken through police lines in Hungary and are marching north on the main highway toward Budapest.

Police repeatedly tried to form lines blocking roadways around a migrant holding center near the Serbian border, but the asylum seekers vastly outnumbered police and were easily able to outflank the lines of officers, jogging through farm fields to reach the motorway. Traffic has been halted in both directions. Police have been walking alongside the marchers but not trying to stop them.

Over the weekend, Hungarian authorities began putting thousands of people on buses to the Austrian border, but the marchers apparently became tired of waiting. Hungary also has stopped checking foreigners for travel visas at train stations, making it easier for the newcomers to leave Hungary for the wealthier West, particularly Germany.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban is blasting other European leaders who blame his country for stoking the chaos, saying Hungary may be a "black sheep" but it's a voice of reason in the EU flock.
