BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Ohio State, the top team in the preseason Associated Press poll and defending national champion, starts a new season tonight with a game at Virginia Tech. A year ago the Hokies upset the Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium 35-21, setting in motion a 13 game winning streak for Ohio State that propelled the Buckeyes to the first-ever national championship determined by a playoff.
NEW YORK (AP) — Roger Federer, the second-seed at the U.S. Open, is facing the highest seeded American male in the tournament, No. 13 John Isner (IHZ'-nur) this evening. Third-seed Andy Murray is also in action today as he faces South Africa's Kevin Anderson.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Final round play is taking place today in the PGA's Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank Championship. The leader at the end of third-round play yesterday was Henrik Stenson by a shot over Rickie Fowler. Sean O'Hair and Matt Jones start the day two strokes back.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A key series in the National League East starts this afternoon as the Nationals entertain the Mets. At the start of play the New Yorkers have a four game lead over Washington. Today's game marks the start of a three-game series with the two teams meeting three more times next month in New York.
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Carl Edwards finished first in yesterday's Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway. The win was the second of the season for Edwards who took the lead on the last pit stop. Pole-sitter Brad Keselowski was second in the race.
