VATICAN CITY (AP) — An official with the European bishops conference is promising a "prompt response" to the pope's call to open Catholic facilities across Europe to refugees. Italian Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (bahn-YAHS'-koh) says European bishops will discuss it at a meeting next week in Jerusalem. Pope Francis today urged every parish, convent and monastery in Europe to host a family "fleeing death" from war or hunger.

UNDATED (AP) — Lech Walesa (lek vah-WEHN'-sah) is weighing in on Europe's refugee crisis. Poland's legendary Solidarity leader and former president says he believes people fleeing war and persecution must be helped, and that he would even be willing to welcome some into his own home. The Nobel Peace Prize winner told private broadcaster TVN24 that "we have to share our last slice of bread with those in need."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina authorities are searching for suspects following a shooting that left a 7-year-old boy dead and three others wounded during a violent holiday weekend in Charlotte. Investigators have no motive or suspects in last night's shooting. Five people have been killed in four separate shootings over the Labor Day weekend in North Carolina's largest city.

MARBLE FALLS, Texas (AP) — A San Antonio School district is investigating after a high school football player ran into the back of a referee watching a play and another player then dove into the official after he fell. Both players were ejected from the game. The athletic director for Northside Independent School District tells the San Antonio Express-News that video of Friday's incident was "very disturbing." The team from John Jay High School in San Antonio was playing Marble Falls High School in Marble Falls.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada wildlife officials say a young black bear euthanized at Lake Tahoe last week had the same mother as two others they've had to put down because they lost their fear of humans. State wildlife biologist Carl Lackey says they've been tracking the 19-year-old female since they first captured and released her in 2004. Most scientists agree now that older bears help teach cubs how to raid trash bins and break into homes.
