UNDATED (AP) — A couple of top-25 teams from the Pac-12 dropped their season opener on Saturday. Kyle Allen threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Texas A&M topped 15th-ranked Arizona State 38-17. Clayton Thorson ran for a touchdown and Justin Jackson had 134 yards rushing as Northwest beat No. 21 Stanford.

NEW YORK (AP) — Five-time champ Roger Federer has moved into the fourth round of the US Open for the 15th straight year with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Germany's Phillip Kohlschreiber. Fifth seed Stan Wawrinka (vah-VRIHN'-kah) advanced to the men's fourth round, as did No. 6 Tomas Berdych (BUR'-dihk), No. 12 Richard Gasquet (gas-KAY') and No. 15 Kevin Anderson. Third-round winners on the women's side include Simona Halep (HAH'-lehp), Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH'-toh-vah), Sam Stosur, Flavia Pennetta, American Varvara Lepchenko, Victoria Azarenka and Johanna Konta, who upset No. 18 Andrea Petkovic.

UNDATED (AP) — The Patriots have cut veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne and 10 others on Saturday, the final day to get NFL rosters to the 53-player limit. The 14-year-veteran played his entire career with Indianapolis, catching 1,070 passes before signing with New England. Quarterback Tim Tebow (TEE'-boh) was released by the Eagles, one day after the team dealt QB Matt Barkley to Arizona.

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Charley Hoffman carded nine birdies in an 8-under 63 that gives him a three-shot lead over Brendon de Jonge at the midway point of the Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank Championship near Boston. Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson are among four players at minus-8. Jordan Spieth (speeth) has missed the cut in consecutive events for the first time in his career, shooting a 74 that left him 6-over.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Brad Keselowski has his first pole of the season, taking the top spot for Sunday night's running of the Southern 500 at Darlington. Kurt Busch will start from outside on the front row. Jeff Gordon qualified fifth in his last race at the Darlington before he retires at the end of the season.
