HOUSTON (AP) — Max Staver threw for 241 yards, and Houston Baptist ran for 250 on the ground to beat Bethany College of Kansas 51-7 Saturday night.

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Staver made his debut after transferring from Tyler Junior College and the University of Florida. Staver completed 13 of 19 for two scores in the opener for both teams.

Ethan Fry caught four passes for 85 yards and Terrance Peters had 72 yards rushing on five carries for the Huskies.

Houston Baptist cruised to a 20-0 first-quarter lead against the Swedes, an NAIA Division I member, and never looked back.

Taylor Holmes blocked Brett Crome's punt in the end zone and landed on it for the game's first score.

Bethany College's Virgil Bridges completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Fred White with 7:16 remaining in the second to make the score 27-7.

Bridges accounted for 155 of Bethany's 220 yards throwing for 136 and running for 19.
