ST. GEORGE — Dixie State opened the Division II football season at home Saturday but lost 43-3 to Colorado Mesa.
Dixie's Alex Giordani, a West Jordan High product, nailed a 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in the first half to provide the Red Storm (0-1) with their only points of the contest.
Former Dixie High quarterback Blake Barney ran the ball 10 times for 95 yards in the loss, which saw the Mavericks jump out to a 34-0 lead.
Jonathon Beverly ran the ball 15 times for 224 yards and a touchdown to lead Colorado Mesa (1-0). Northern Colorado transfer quarterback Sean Rubalcaba completed 7-of-11 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown and also ran the ball seven times for 45 yards and another score for the Mavericks, who got a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown with 8:33 left in the opening quarter and rolled from there.
