CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Detrez Newsome threw one touchdown pass and ran for another to lead Western Carolina to a 42-14 victory over Division II Mars Hill on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.
Newsome threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Spearman Robinson on the first play from scrimmage, and added an 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Darius Ramsey ran for two touchdowns, and Corey Holloway ran for one for the Catamounts.
Troy Mitchell was 29 of 43 for 298 yards passing with one touchdown. His 44-yard touchdown pass to Karnorris Benson stretched the Catamounts' lead to 28-7.
Matt Layman threw a 25-yard touchdown to Keshaun Taylor to pull Mars Hill to 20-7 at halftime. The Lions' Austin Brown threw a 46-yard pass to Gilbert Johnson that led to his 24-yard touchdown pass to Shaikel Davis in the fourth quarter.
The Catamounts have won 16-straight games against the Lions.
