PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Two people familiar with the move have told The Associated Press that the Philadelphia Eagles have released quarterback Tim Tebow. It was thought that the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner had won the No. 3 quarterback job when Philadelphia traded Matt Barkley to Arizona yesterday. Tebow was trying to make a comeback after being out of the NFL for two seasons.
NEW YORK (AP) — No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh) has moved into the fourth round of the U.S. Open with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in 66 minutes. The two-time Wimbledon champ has now moved into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the third time in her career.
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi says starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil will not play in today's game against UT Martin as a precautionary measure because of an ongoing investigation by the NCAA. Ole Miss said during the summer it was working with the NCAA regarding potential violations after Tunsil's stepfather made allegations that the offensive lineman had improper contact with agents and received improper benefits.
ST. LOUIS (AP) —The showdown between the top two teams in the NL Central continues tonight when the Cardinals host Pittsburgh. Gerrit Cole will be looking for his 16th win for the Pirates, who go into the game 5 1-2 back of first-place St. Louis.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hard-luck Shelby Miller will be trying to snap a 19-game winless drought when he takes the mound for the slumping Braves at Washington. Miller is getting very little run support, as his 2.56 ERA indicates. Atlanta has scored two runs or less in 20 of Miller's 27 starts.
