SALT LAKE CITY — Salmonella-tainted cucumbers imported from Mexico are responsible for sending seven Utahns to the hospital, and residents are being told to throw away cucumbers that may be contaminated, health officials said Friday.

In all, 27 states are affected in the recall, which was issued following 285 cases of Salmonella Poona since mid-July.

The cucumbers were imported by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce, a California distributor, said Utah Department of Agriculture and Food spokesman Jack Wilbur.

About 30 infections were reported in Utah, including 17 in Salt Lake County and seven in Utah County, Wilbur said. Most people infected were under 18 years old.

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever that begin between 12 hours and three days after exposure to the contamination. Children under age 5, people with weak immune systems and the elderly are especially vulnerable to a serious infection, according to Wilbur.

Andrew & Williamson has recalled all cucumbers under their Limited Edition brand because of the contamination. Costco, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Safeway, Albertsons and Kroger are all listed as destinations for Andrews & Williamson products, as are Olive Garden, Red Lobster and In-N-Out.

Utahns are advised to check for recently purchased cucumbers and dispose of them, Wilbur said. The affected cucumbers are dark green, 7 to 10 inches long, and are sold without any packaging.

In Utah, the Salt Lake County, Utah County, Davis County, Tooele, Weber-Morgan, Bear River and Central health departments have reported Salmonella cases since July.

In California, 66 cases have been reported, and 54 have been reported in Arizona.
