ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — A 52-year-old St. George woman accused of causing a fatal accident by texting and driving has been sentenced to a year in jail.
The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports (http://bit.ly/1LXAqpm) that Carla Brennan insists that she wasn't texting at the time. She agreed to plead no contest to a reduced automobile homicide charge in a deal with prosecutors in June.
Prosecutors say she rear-ended a car in March 2013, causing it to hit a couple walking on the sidewalk. Fifty-six-year-old David Henson was killed and his wife Leslee Henson was seriously injured.
Brennan said she texted from home to say she was late for work, but investigators contend the messages were sent within minutes of the accident.
Defense attorney Edward Flint says Brennan is a normal person who made a bad mistake.
