ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) — Hundreds of protesters have filled the street in front of the federal courthouse in Ashland, Kentucky, where a hearing is taking place for a county clerk who is refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has defied federal court orders, saying her religious beliefs don't let her endorse same-sex marriage. If she continues to refuse to follow the law, she could be hit with fines or jail time. Signs carried by demonstrators range from the violent — turn to Jesus or burn — to simple statements of support.
NEW YORK (AP) — A defeat for the NFL today, in the deflated football case. A judge in New York is wiping out the four-game suspension that had been handed to New England quarterback Tom Brady over the under-inflated footballs that had been used in the AFC championship game last season. That means Brady will be able to play when the season opens next week. The judge says NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell went too far, in administering what the judge called "his own brand of industrial justice."
PARIS (AP) — A French prosecutor says the piece of wing discovered in July on a remote Indian Ocean island has been formally identified as having come from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. In a statement, the Paris prosecutor's office said technical analysis of the part had enabled investigators to link a serial number with a corresponding number on the Boeing 777 that disappeared in March of last year with 239 people aboard.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The father of a 3-year-old boy who was photographed lying dead on a Turkish beach has described how their overloaded boat flipped over in the sea and he quickly realized his sons and his wife had drowned. The photograph of Aylan Kurdi has highlighted the issue of desperate migrants risking their lives to try to reach Europe. The boy's father says the boat's captain panicked due to high waves and jumped into the sea and fled, leaving him in control of the small craft, which then flipped.
BICSKE, Hungary (AP) — They thought they were going to Austria. But a trainload of migrants in Hungary discovered that their train had taken them instead to a migrant camp. And scores of police officers in riot gear were there to greet them. Some migrants tried to flee on foot. Others scuffled with police and forced their way back onto the train, starting a standoff with police on a sweltering day. One migrant said through an open window, "We don't need food and water. Just let us go to Germany."
