OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A 22-year-old woman accused of stabbing her girlfriend to death in Ogden last year has been declared mentally competent to stand trial. The Ogden Standard-Examiner reports that psychologists have decided Victoria Mendoza can face a murder charge in the death of 21-year-old Tawnee Baird. Prosecutors say the couple had a volatile five-year relationship that included drug use, jealousy and physical fights. Police say Baird suffered 46 stab wounds last year after they fought about a guy.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Provo police are tracking a new suspect in an unsolved 2008 rape case after new funding allowed the department to start analyzing a backlog of untested rape kits. The Daily Herald of Provo reports evidence gathered from the victim after the attack wasn't submitted to the FBI for analysis until this year because of a funding shortage. Police say their analysis identified 36-year-old Arlando Barton, whose DNA was already in an Arizona criminal database.

DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a Utah man has been charged with felony vandalism for defacing a war memorial in Northern California. Police say 18-year-old Jared Vance of Provo has been charged but not arrested in connection with the June 8 vandalism at the All Wars Memorial in the town of Danville.

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah (AP) — A new squadron of fighter jets has started arriving at Hill Air Force Base. Two F-35 jets touched down yesterday afternoon at the base 20 miles north of Salt Lake City. A total of 72 of the fighter jets and their pilots will be permanently based in Utah. One to two additional jets are expected to arrive every month until the full fleet is in place in 2019.
