NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams returns to the court today in third-round play at the U.S. Open. The top seed is looking to keep her goal of winning all four majors in one year alive. The last player to achieve the calendar Grand Slam, winning all four majors in on year, was Steffi Graf (grahf) in 1988.

NEW YORK (AP) — The competitive playing career of Mardy Fish is over. Once ranked among the top-10 players in the world, Fish had announced his retirement at the end of the U.S. Open. For him that end has come with a second-round loss.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Place-kicker Chris Bowell has re-signed with the New York Giants. He was waived by the team Aug. 16 and replaces the injured Josh Brown, who bruised his leg two weeks ago when he made a tackle against Jacksonville.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Salvador has retired from hockey and the New Jersey Devils. He spent 14 years in the big leagues playing for the Devils and St. Louis Blues. He appeared in nearly 800 games and served as the Devils' captain the past three seasons.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The third game of a three-game series between the Dodgers and Giants is tonight in Los Angeles. The home team has won the first two and now tops the National League West and the Giants by 5 ½ games. The clubs will close out the regular season with three games Sept. 28-30 in San Francisco.
