RENO, Nev. (AP) — A California fugitive who was shot in the face by a Sparks police officer when he fled U.S. marshals attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a Reno apartment building remains in critical but stable condition.
Reno police identified the man Thursday as Lionel Irving, 31, of Oakland, California.
Police say Irving has a history of violent crimes, including robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and escape. He's wanted for a parole violation as well as questioning in connection with a homicide in Oakland.
A 24-year veteran of the Sparks Police Department who was working with the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force told Reno police he opened fire because he saw Irving "reach into his waistband with a black object in his hand."
Reno police Lt. William Rulla said Thursday the case remains under investigation.
