FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — Despite darkness, about 100 officers and helicopters are searching for three suspects believed responsible for the fatal shooting of a police officer in northern Illinois. It happened in the village of Fox Lake, near the border with Wisconsin. The officer was a 30-year veteran and was married with four children.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A white, small town, ex-police chief in South Carolina has been sentenced to one year of home detention for the 2011 shooting death of an unarmed black man. Prosecutors dropped a murder charge against former Eutawville chief Richard Combs in exchange for a guilty plea to a charge of misconduct in office. Combs stood trial twice but both cases ended with hung juries. The town paid the family of Walter Bailey $400,000.

HOUSTON (AP) — It now appears that the suspect in the shooting death of a Houston-area sheriff's deputy was twice committed to mental health facilities in the last five years. An attorney for Shannon Miles says he was committed to a Houston area psychiatric center in 2010. It was disclosed on Monday that Miles had spent several months at a state mental hospital after a 2012 arrest at a homeless shelter in Austin.

MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — A county clerk in Kentucky who says she's acting with the authority of God in refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses will now face a federal judge -- who could fine her or even send her to jail. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis again turned away several gay and lesbian couples who sought marriage licenses on Tuesday,, even though the Supreme Court rejected her appeal. A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge has reiterated that he'll rule by Friday whether New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady must serve a four-game suspension for "Deflategate." Judge Richard Berman had hoped that Brady and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would compromise. At issue is whether the NFL properly followed its collective bargaining agreement.
