FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — Illinois authorities say the police officer who was shot to death after chasing three men on foot was a veteran of three decades and was the father of four sons. Officials in Fox Lake identified the officer as Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewitz (GLIHN'-uh-wihtz). The manhunt involves scores of officers from multiple agencies, bloodhounds and helicopters.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A white, small town, ex-police chief in South Carolina has been sentenced to one year of home detention for the 2011 shooting death of an unarmed black man. Prosecutors dropped a murder charge against former Eutawville chief Richard Combs in exchange for a guilty plea to a charge of misconduct in office. Combs stood trial twice but both cases ended with hung juries. The town paid the family of Walker Baily $400,000.
NEW YORK (AP) — One analyst says there is nothing wrong with the U.S. economy but the stock market is fragile. Investors remain jittery about what's ailing China. The worries sparked a big sell-off again on Wall street. At the end of a volatile day the Dow wound up losing just over 469 points. The S&P fell 58 points and Nasdaq dropped 150 points.
MIAMI (AP) — Tired of ducking jabs by Donald Trump, GOP presidential rival Jeb Bush has taken off the gloves. Bush intensified his criticism of the former reality television star on multiple fronts, including interviews and a Web video featuring clips of Trump promoting traditionally liberal positions in old interviews. Bush says Trump has been personalizing attacks.
DETROIT (AP) — Federal regulators have lowered their estimate of potentially defective Takata air bags on U.S. roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says approximately 23.4 million driver and passenger air bag inflators on 19.2 million vehicles are being recalled and need to be replaced. At least eight people have been killed by Takata air bags, which can explode with too much force and spew shrapnel into the vehicle.
