NEW YORK (AP) — There's been no ruling from U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in the Deflatgate case. Tom Brady and commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') both met with the judge yesterday who promised a ruling sometime this week.
NEW YORK (AP) — This is the second day of play at the U.S. Open and so far there have been no surprises. The women's second-seed Simona Halep (HAL'-ehp) won her first match as did fourth-seed Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee). For the men, 13th seeded American John Isner (IHZ'-nur) is a first round winner as well.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles city council has voted to give the mayor the right to execute agreements that could eventually lead to the city hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. The vote was 15-0 and the result gives Mayor Eric Garcetti the right to negotiate with the U.S. Olympic Committee without obligating the city financially. The USOC is expected to announce that Los Angeles is the U.S. candidate for the Games against bids from Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany, and Budapest, Hungary.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The second of two games this week between the Dodgers and Giants in Los Angeles is coming up tonight. LA won the opener last night to take a 4 ½ game lead over the defending world champs in the National League West. The pitching matchup is a dandy, with Madison Bumgarner going for the Giants against Zack Greinke (GREHN'-kee).
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Sun Belt Conference is growing. Officials say Coastal Carolina has accepted an invitation to join the league and in the process will move its football program up to the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision by 2018. Coastal Carolina will join the Sun Belt in all sports except football beginning with the 2016-17 academic year.
