FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The co-founder and principal of a private Christian school in Fayetteville is due in court after authorities say a registered sex offender was allowed to work there in violation of state law.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says Joan Ellen Dayton is expected in court Tuesday. She was charged with failing to report an incident as the state's sex offender registration law requires and aiding the presence of a registered person on school property.
The principal of Fayetteville's Freedom Christian Academy was named as a co-conspirator after 50-year-old Paul Conner was charged in May with violating the sex offender law by doing contract work at the school where his wife was a teacher.
Conner pleaded guilty in Robeson County in 2001 to two sex offenses involving an 8-year-old girl.
