The president will use Alaska's melting glaciers and sinking villages to convey the urgency of the situation during his three day visit to the state.
UNDATED (AP) — President Barack Obama is offering his condolences to the wife of a deputy who was ambushed and shot to death while gassing up last week. Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth was in uniform when Shannon Miles allegedly shot him 15 times. The county sheriff is linking the attack to the "Black Lives Matter" movement, though no official motive for the shooting has been released. A lawyer who represented Miles says the Houston man has a history of mental illness.
ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta-area police officer has been shot and taken to a hospital. DeKalb County authorities say the officer was shot Monday night. Details of the shooting have not yet been released. A spokeswoman says the officer will undergo surgery at the hospital. The extent of his or her injuries is unknown.
MIAMI (AP) — Heavy rain and strong winds are spreading over the Cape Verde Islands as Hurricane Fred makes landfall. Forecasters say Fred is the easternmost hurricane known to have formed in the Atlantic tropics, and the first to actually pass over the islands as a hurricane. A hurricane warning is in effect. Maximum sustained winds are about 75 mph.
NEW YORK (AP) — Pope Francis has asked a Chicago girl to sing for him during a satellite message to people in three American cities. The 17-year-old cried as she described the bullying she's faced because of a rare skin condition. She told Francis she turns to music for comfort and sang him a song in Spanish. The pope spoke with people in Los Angeles, Chicago and McAllen, Texas. He'll make his first trip to the U.S. in late September.
