KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Hurricane Ignacio is expected to weaken from a Category 3 hurricane to a tropical storm as it moves closer to Hawaii's Big Island and Maui today. The islands have been under a tropical storm watch, but that has been canceled. Several residents say they're treating the storm like business as usual. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Fred has strengthened to a hurricane as it approaches the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is hoping to generate more public urgency to deal with climate change as he takes off today for a three-day trip to Alaska. In advance of the outing, he sought to show solidarity with Alaska Natives. Obama announced yesterday that his administration is changing the name of North America's tallest peak, Mount McKinley, to Denali, its traditional Athabascan (ath-uh-BAS'-kun) name.

HOUSTON (AP) — The man charged with shooting to death a suburban Houston sheriff's deputy is scheduled to be arraigned later today. Shannon Miles is charged with capital murder in the death of Darren Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Goforth was shot while filling up his gas tank in Cypress, Texas. Authorities call the shooting "clearly unprovoked."

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Salem High School in the Roanoke, Virginia area will open its doors to the community today to commemorate the life of an alumnus — 27-year-old Adam Ward, the TV news cameraman shot to death on live TV last week, along with a reporter. Ward's family is asking visitors to wear the colors of his favorite teams, Virginia Tech and Salem High, where he played football. Ward's funeral is set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Roanoke.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's coast guard says it's picked up nearly 2,500 migrants from the sea over the weekend, in dozens of search and rescue operations off the coast of several Greek islands. Greece is dealing with a heavy flow of migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia, who are trying to escape war and poverty.
