JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) — Crews are working hard to stop the spread of a group of central Oregon wildfires. Officials say the fires are raging across 159 square miles. The blazes destroyed two more homes and a guest house today. About 950 firefighters are battling the fires that had previously destroyed more than three dozen homes in the area. Some residents have been told to evacuate.

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Three U.S. Forest Service firefighters who were killed battling wildfires in Washington state earlier this month are being honored. Several thousand people gathered today in Wenatchee for a memorial service for 20-year-old Tom Zbyszewski, 26-year-old Andrew Zajac, and 31-year-old Richard Wheeler. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell gave the eulogy.

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Officials on the tiny storm-ravaged Caribbean island of Dominica are appealing for international aid. The island has declared a disaster after Tropical Storm Erika triggered flooding and landslides which killed at least 20 people and destroyed hundreds of homes. More than 50 people are still missing. Erika whipped the island for more than five hours Wednesday.

BEIRUT (AP) — Islamic State militants in Syria have severely damaged the Bel Temple, considered one of the greatest sites of the ancient world, in a massive explosion Sunday That's according to activists. The 2,000-year-old temple was part of the remains of the ancient caravan city of Palmyra. A few days ago, IS propaganda images purportedly showed another temple being blown up.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wes Craven, whose "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Scream" movies made him one of the most recognizable names in the horror film genre, has died. He was 76. Craven's family says he died in his Los Angeles home today after battling brain cancer. A prolific writer, director and editor, Craven is credited with reinventing the teen horror genre.
