ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Rescue teams are working to reopen roads to remote communities on the Caribbean island of Dominica after strong winds and intense rain from Tropical Storm Erika on Wednesday triggered flooding and landslides. Hundreds of homes were destroyed. At least 20 people died and more than 50 are missing. The country is appealing for international aid.
HONOLULU (AP) — Residents on the Big Island of Hawaii and those on Maui are expecting high winds, heavy rain and ocean swells from an approaching hurricane. But Ignacio has been downgraded to a Category 3 storm and is on a weakening trend as it moves to the northeast of Hawaii. Forecasters say stormy weather won't hit the Big Island until Monday night and Maui on Tuesday.
HOUSTON (AP) — The sheriff of Harris County, Texas, says investigators have no information from the suspect in the fatal shooting of a deputy that would shed light on his motive. Shannon Miles is being charged with capital murder in the shooting of Deputy Darren Goforth at a suburban Houston gas station on Friday. Miles, who has a criminal record, will be arraigned on Monday.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — The governor of Borno in northeast Nigeria says the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has killed 68 villagers in a remote area of his state. The governor confirmed Friday night's attack, during a meeting with parents of the 219 girls abducted from a school in the region by the extremists last year. Boko Haram's six-year-old uprising has killed nearly 20,000 people.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A former Maryland governor whose 26-year career in state government ended with his 1977 conviction on political corruption charges has died. Marvin Mandel, who was once considered one of Maryland's most powerful and effective governors, was 95. His family says Mandel died this afternoon.
