HOUSTON (AP) — The suspect in the fatal shooting of a uniformed Harris County sheriff's deputy in suburban Houston will be arraigned on capital murder charges tomorrow. Shannon Miles had a lengthy criminal record going back a decade, but never spent more than short stints in jail. Miles is accused of gunning down veteran Deputy Darren Goforth as he was pumping gas Friday.
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Community religious leaders are remembering the two television journalists who were shot and killed on the air last week in Roanoke, Virginia. An interfaith service was held today for 24-year-old reporter Alison Parker and 27-year-old cameraman Adam Ward. Both were killed by a former co-worker Wednesday. The gunman, Vester Flanagan, later killed himself.
HONOLULU (AP) — Hurricane Ignacio is weakening in the Pacific. It's been downgraded to a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 115 mph. Ignacio is expected to become a tropical storm by Tuesday. It's currently heading toward Hawaii and is expected to bring high winds, heavy rain and ocean swells to the Big Island and Maui.
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The family of a 62-year-old woman who was rescued after being stranded in California's rugged Sierra Nevada for nine days says she's recovering from surgery to set the broken bones on her lower left leg. Miyuki Harwood was found Saturday morning in a remote area after she used a whistle to get the attention of searchers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mount McKinley is getting a new name -- or rather an old one. The Obama administration is changing the name of North America's tallest mountain peak to Denali. It's a major symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives on the eve of President Barack Obama's historic visit to Alaska where residents have informally called the mountain Denali, meaning "the high one," for years.
