HOUSTON (AP) — Records show the man charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a suburban Houston sheriff's deputy had a criminal history going back a decade, but never spent more than short stints in jail. Shannon J. Miles is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in the shooting of Darren Goforth, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Goforth was gunned down Friday while pumping gas. Miles' record includes convictions for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct with a firearm.

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Community religious leaders have gathered in Roanoke, Virginia, to remember two television journalists who were shot and killed last week. The interfaith service for 24-year-old reporter Alison Parker and 27-year-old cameraman Adam Ward featured music from the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and others. Ward and Parker were on an early morning assignment at Smith Mountain Lake when a former co-worker walked up and shot them. He later killed himself.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's Big Island and Maui are under a tropical storm watch as a Category 4 hurricane approaches. Hurricane Ignacio has sustained winds of 130 mph. Forecasters don't expect it to hit Hawaii directly but they say it will likely bring some very high surf and gusty winds. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says stormy weather could hit the Big Island tonight and Maui on Monday.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The family of a woman who was stranded in California's Sierra Nevada for nine days says she is recovering from surgery to set the broken bones on her left leg. Miyuki Harwood's family says she is asking for "uninterrupted rest and quiet." The 62-year-old woman was found yesterday in a remote area of the Sierra National Forest after she used a whistle to get the attention of a search team. She survived by crawling to a creek and scooping water.

ANDALUSIA, Pa. (AP) — An artist known for his portraits of prominent figures has died. Nelson Shanks was 77. Subjects of his paintings included Princess Diana, Pope John Paul II and presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. His studio says Shanks died Friday at his home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
