HOUSTON (AP) — Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman says a 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a deputy in suburban Houston. Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth was in uniform when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots Friday night as the deputy filled up his patrol car at a gas station.

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Rescue crews are trudging through mud, rocks and uprooted trees to reach communities cut off by a tropical storm that killed at least 20 people and left nearly 50 missing in the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica. Erika is now just a trough of low pressure, but forecasters say remnants of the storm could produce heavy rain in areas still in its path, including Florida.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in California say dozens of San Quentin prisoners are under observation after an inmate was diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease. Weekend visits have been curtailed, and drinking water is being trucked in to the prison. Portable shower units arrived today for inmate use. The prison has about 3,700 inmates and 1,800 employees.

LUFKIN, Texas (AP) — Officials say an East Texas teenager is accused of pushing his pregnant girlfriend's 3-year-old nephew into a pond so the boy would drown to make room for the unborn child to live at their home. The 17-year-old faces a charge of capital murder of a person under age 6. He was booked as an adult in the Angelina County jail after his arrest Friday/

NEW YORK (AP) — The first African-American and youngest person to ever play the role of Jean Valjean (zhahn val-ZHAHN') on Broadway in "Les Misérables" has died. He was 21. According to a show spokesman, Kyle Jean-Baptiste died last night after falling from a fire escape. He was an ensemble member of the company and an understudy for Valjean, making his first appearance July 23.
