HOUSTON (AP) — A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while pumping gas into his patrol car in a Houston suburb and officials say the killer is still on the loose this morning. Authorities say Deputy Darren Goforth, a 10-year-veteran, was shot multiple times by a man who approached him from behind.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Even as Tropical Storm Erika weakens, Florida officials are telling residents to be prepared anyway. Despite greater uncertainty in the storm's path and intensity, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency on for the entire state. The storm has the potential to rake Florida's west coast with heavy rains starting late Sunday or early Monday. The storm killed 20 people on the island of Dominica.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It's the tenth anniversary of one of the deadliest storms in American history. Residents across Mississippi and Louisiana will pay homage to those who died in Hurricane Katrina, thank those who came to rebuild and celebrate how far the region has come. In Mississippi, churches will ring their bells to remember when the storm made landfall. In New Orleans officials will lay wreaths at the hurricane memorial and at the levee that ruptured in the Lower 9th Ward. Overgrown lots and empty slabs speak to the slow recovery in some communities.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban has claimed responsibility for separate attacks in eastern Afghanistan that killed at least eight police officers. Another 15 officers were wounded. Authorities also say an Afghan airstrike killed 16 insurgents and wounded 17 late yesterday.
PARIS (AP) — There's an emergency meeting today in Paris of interior ministers and transport ministers from nine countries to rethink train security after American passengers thwarted an Islamic extremist attack on a Paris-bound train. Baggage scans, identity checks and more armed guards are among measures being considered.
