PROVO — Lone Peak is on the road and considers itself an underdog at defending Class 4A champ Timpview. The Thunderbirds feel the pressure of three-straight state titles.
Both teams like their role in Friday's KSL Game of the Week, which kicks off at 7 p.m.
Both teams used big-play offenses and stout defenses to record opening week shutouts. The Knights went north to take down Bountiful 31-0, while Timpview rolled to a 35-0 win at West.
The Thunderbirds are ranked No. 1 in 4A, No. 3 overall, in the latest Deseret News poll, while Lone Peak is a healthy No. 10 in the same rankings.
But Timpview-Lone Peak isn't the only top game this week.
A couple of 3A powers will meet when Manti and Juan Diego square off tonight. Both teams are 1-0, with the Templars holding Carbon to one scoring play last week while Douglas Sheiss and Kayden Stevenson each ran for two touchdowns in a win over the Dinos.
Meanwhile, Juan Diego upset 5A's West Jordan on the road 132 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Kayden Hayward.
One of the most intense small-school rivalries will clash for the 56th time when Morgan and South Summit battle in the second week of the season. Morgan handed South Summit its only loss of the year en route to the 2A state title last year, and both are 1-0 entering the matchup.
Jordan came away with an impressive win over Desert Hills last week and next looks to knock off recently re-energized Roy. Drew Lisk is the quarterback trying to fill the big shoes of departed senior Austin Kafentzis, and he threw for 437 yards and four touchdowns in his season debut against the Thunder.
And finally, Sky View and Logan no longer play in the same region — or even classification — but the two rivals meet tonight with more on the line than a win, an undefefeated start to the season and potential postseason seeding — this one's for the top bragging rights in Cache County. Logan is ranked No. 1 in Class 3AA after a dramatic, double-overtime win over Box Elder a week ago, while Sky View opened up its 5A campaign with a road win at Riverton.
