CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee Historical Society marker has been unveiled in East Tennessee to honor the first black students to attend Clinton High School after a federal judge ordered it to desegregate.
Media report the marker commemorates the 12 black students who attended and became known as the Clinton 12.
The marker was unveiled Thursday at Clinton Middle School, which is located at the former high school.
The idea for the marker came from a seventh grade teacher. Kevin Powers said he worked with one of his classes to do the research, write a proposal to the state historical commission and raise the $1,500 needed for the marker.
