MONETA, Va. (AP) — Two customers at a coffee shop in Moneta (moh-NEE'-tah), Virginia this morning say they had reservations about going there, because they wanted to be respectful -- but they decided the community and its businesses need support. The coffee shop today became the first business to reopen at the plaza where two journalists were killed during a live broadcast on Wednesday. The manager of a gift shop says, "It's very bittersweet, but we are glad to be back."

PALERMO, Sicily (AP) — Prosecutors in Sicily say they have detained 10 people on suspicion of smuggling and murder for having allegedly crammed dozens of migrants into the airless hold of a boat where 52 bodies were found this week. Police say survivors have told them that smugglers would beat the migrants back with knives if they tried to come out of the hold for air. Meanwhile, Hungarian police say four people are in custody in connection with the 71 migrants who suffocated to death in a refrigerated truck found parked on a main Austrian highway.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Rick Scott is declaring a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Erika nears Florida. The storm could hit the peninsula Monday. A hurricane hasn't hit Florida in 10 years. The latest forecasts show that Erika will remain a tropical storm when it makes landfall. Today, it's been lashing Puerto Rico with wind and rain. It earlier killed four people on the island of Dominica.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have opened slightly lower after a sharp two-day surge, as the stock market closes out a wild week. Stocks fell heavily Monday and Tuesday on concerns about the health of China's economy. The market then rebounded over the next two days. World stock markets have been uneven today as the global rally faded.
