ZUWARA, Libya (AP) — Libya's Coast Guard has been collecting the bodies of migrants off the country's coast near the port city of Zuwara. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says an estimated 200 migrants are missing and feared dead after two smuggling boats capsized. The boats were carrying a total of about 500 migrants when they were intercepted. About 100 people have been rescued and taken to shore in Libya.
VIENNA (AP) — Austrian police investigating the deaths of 71 migrants found in a refrigerated truck say they likely suffocated. The truck was found abandoned on Austria's main highway leading to Hungary. The chief of police in Austria's eastern Burgenland province says a Syrian travel document was found, indicating that at least some of the dead were refugees fleeing violence in Syria. He also says Hungarian police have arrested three suspects.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Erika is lashing Puerto Rico with heavy rains and wind this morning, after killing four people and causing devastating floods in the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica (doh-MIN'-ih-kuh). Some 20 people remain missing in Dominica. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Erika might fall apart over Hispaniola or Puerto Rico but could possibly strengthen into a hurricane as it nears South Florida early next week.
HONOLULU (AP) — For the second time in a week a popular Hawaii beach is closed after sewage from a treatment plant was discharged into the ocean. A million gallons of treated but not yet disinfected wastewater spilled from the East Honolulu Wastewater Treatment plant, closing Sandy Beach and its surroundings Thursday. The closure comes a day after beaches near Waikiki were reopened following a similar issue.
HONG KONG (AP) — World stock markets have been uneven so far today. A global rally driven by upbeat U.S. economic data continued in Asia, where the Shanghai Composite Index in mainland China led regional gains, rising 4.8 percent. But the rally appears to be fading in Europe, where benchmark indexes in France, Germany and Britain are lower in early trading. U.S. futures suggest a lower opening on Wall Street.
