NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — One of three men arrested in connection to a fatal shooting in Nampa on Saturday has been charged with multiple felonies.

Court records show 20-year-old Alberto Chavez is charged in Canyon County with second-degree murder and destroying or concealing evidence.

Chavez is accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Kyle Jackson who had reportedly been antagonizing drivers by yelling and waving a red bandanna Saturday. Chavez told police Jackson was a member of a rival gang and had slashed his face with a knife.

Nampa Sgt. Joe Ramirez says that by waving a red bandanna, Jackson —who belonged in a gang affiliated with the color blue— was essentially taunting rival gang members. Officers had warned Jackson earlier that Saturday they he could be arrested for disturbing police, but they did not take him into custody.

Jackson was later found unconscious from a gunshot to the head.

On Sunday, Nampa police attempted a traffic stop of Chavez and two other men. The driver fled. At least 10 patrol cars were involved in the high-speed pursuit, which reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, before the SUV rolled over outside Horseshoe Bend.

"What happened in the city of Nampa on Saturday . doesn't happen all the time," Ramirez said. "We haven't had anything like that. In my 20 years (with NPD), I couldn't come up with one case that was so blatantly gang-related."

Chavez's next court appearance is Sept. 8 for a preliminary hearing. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
