SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church — the nation's largest sponsor of Boy Scout units — is keeping its longtime affiliation with the organization despite its decision to allow gay troop leaders. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made the announcement after getting assurances they can appoint troop leaders according to their own religious and moral values. The Mormon religion opposes gay marriage and believes homosexual activity is a sin.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Hundreds of people rallied at the Utah State Capitol to protest Gov. Gary Hebert's decision to stop the flow of federal money to Planned Parenthood in Utah. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Planned Parenthood of Utah officials say the governor's decision was political and threatens important women's health services like screening for STDs and cancer. The event also drew about 50 people for a counter-protest against abortion.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man convicted in his wife's fatal shooting is asking for a new trial after a medical examiner found that the death might not have been a homicide. The deputy state medical examiner says in court documents that he re-examined the evidence in the case and determined that 25-year-old Heidy Truman could have shot herself. Conrad Truman has maintained his innocence.
LOGAN, Utah (AP) — Bail has been set at $500,000 for the 27-year-old Utah State University student facing rape charges. The Herald Journal reports that 27-year-old Jason Relopez was arrested in July after two women told police he raped them.
