NEW YORK (AP) — It's been a day of ups and downs on Wall Street. Traders rode a rally for most of the day, and then the market retreated in the final hour. Minutes before the closing bell, gains evaporated. The Dow closed 205 points lower.

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (AP) — Tense moments at a West Virginia high school today after a 14-year-old boy with a handgun held several students and a teacher hostage in a classroom. State police say negotiators convinced the student at Philip Barbour High -- in Philippi (FIHL'-ih-pee) -- to surrender. No one was injured. Students in the rest of the school were moved to a nearby football field and sent home by bus.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Funeral plans have been announced for the state trooper who was fatally shot Sunday in southwest Louisiana while trying to help an apparently stranded driver. The funeral for Senior Trooper Steven Vincent will take place Saturday in Lake Charles. The suspect, Kevin Daigle, has been charged with murder. Authorities also suspect that he was involved in the death of his roommate.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Conditions couldn't be worse for crews battling wildfires in Washington state. Temperatures and winds are rising and humidity is falling. That could expand what's already the largest wildfire on record in the state. Similar concerns exist in Southern California, where temperatures up to 106 are forecast for interior valleys and deserts.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland has moved the last inmates out of the dangerously decrepit men's section of the Baltimore City Detention Center today. The notorious facility pre-dates modern penal facility standards, with some of its walls dating to the 19th century. It has been known for its hazardous conditions, including blind corners and dark corridors.
