SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert is giving final approval to a plan to build a new state prison west of the Salt Lake City airport. Speaking today on KUED-TV, Herbert said the wetland-rimmed site about 3 miles west of Salt Lake City International Airport is the best place to build a facility housing 4,000-plus inmates.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — In an audio recording released this week, a Utah man convicted of a killing his girlfriend and wounding her roommate nearly two decades ago can be heard saying during a parole hearing the victims' families should "get over it." The recording of Michael Patterson's comments in 2009 was released Wednesday by the Utah Board of Pardons to the Deseret News newspaper. The newspaper requested the audio for a Tuesday parole hearing for Patterson, but a clerical error resulted in the older audio being sent.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City's Neumont University has named former Brigham Young University track star Shaun McAlmont as its new president. The 49-year-old McAlmont was most recently the CEO of a technical education institution with campuses in 15 states called Lincoln Education Services. McAlmont attended BYU in the late 1980s.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Transportation officials say 1 in every 5 drivers shouldn't be in the carpool lane on Interstate 15. The Salt Lake Tribune reports violators are driving solo, aren't paying tolls, or haven't acquired a decal from the state qualifying their clean-fuel vehicles. The Utah Department of Transportation deputy director Shane Marshall says 1,616 tickets were issued in the last year.
