COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A man is in custody with minor injuries Saturday morning following a standoff with SWAT teams in Cottonwood Heights which began Friday night, police said.
Just after 12 a.m. Saturday in the area of 7450 South and 2135 East in Cottonwood Heights, officers arrested Gabriel Roybal, 43, after a standoff lasting several hours, according to Cottonwood Heights Police. Roybal, who had barricaded himself in his home, was wanted on warrants for alleged robbery, fleeing and possession of a stolen vehicle. Only minor injuries were suffered in the eventual arrest, police said.
Barricaded suspect taken into custody. Sandy/CH SWAT and South Jordan SWAT did a great job!! — CH Police (@CHPolice) July 18, 2015
SWAT teams from Sandy, Cottonwood Heights and South Jordan all participated in the arrest, which took place over six hours after police made initial contact. Roybal was reportedly in his garage when he saw an officer approaching, then retreated inside his home and refused to answer the door or his phone, according to police.
Because Roybal has been known by police to carry firearms, appropriate precautions were taken.
