PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A Pleasant Grove man has drowned while swimming in Utah Lake. Billy Joe Haney, 29, was swimming Tuesday with two friends at the jetties at Utah Lake State Park.

Yvette Rice of the Utah County sheriff's office said they swam 100 feet to some rocks, where they rested, and then started back.

"As they were coming back, the victim became distressed," Rice said. She said his friends tried to help him, but when he pushed them down into the water, they backed off and he never resurfaced.

Rice said a witness on the shore called 911.

"They could not explain why he became panicky," Rice said of the friends.

She said the body was found in 9 feet of water and recovered at 6:25 p.m.
