GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — The cleanup of a 9 mile-long oil spill off the Southern California coast continues, as the environmental impact is being assessed. More than 300 workers just northwest of Santa Barbara in protective suits are shoveling black sludge off beaches. The oil escaped from a ruptured pipeline. Federal regulators are investigating the cause of the leak and the pipe's condition.
BOSTON (AP) — Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in Boston to trying to silence a witness in a double murder case by shooting the man in the face. Prosecutors say Hernandez shot friend Alexander Bradley in 2013 in Florida a night after Bradley made a remark about the 2012 double slaying. Hernandez is accused of fatally shooting two men over a spilled drink in a bar.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A federal appeals court has delayed sex reassignment surgery for a transgender prison inmate in California, hours after a state panel recommended that she be paroled. The pair of decisions makes it less likely that convicted killer Michelle-Lael Norsworthy, who has lived as a woman since the 1990s, will receive the surgery before she is released from prison.
