NEW YORK (AP) — David Letterman has signed off as host of CBS's "Late Show." He was ushered into retirement Wednesday night by four presidents and a long list of celebrities. Letterman said goodbye after 33 years and 6,028 broadcasts of his late-night shows on CBS and NBC. The final "Late Show" ran long, some 17 minutes over its usual hour, and CBS planned to let it air without cutting it.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Police are looking for a suspect in the mysterious slayings of three members of a wealthy Washington, D.C. family and their housekeeper inside their multi-million-dollar home. An arrest warrant has been issued for 34-year-old Daron Dylon Wint on charges of first-degree murder. The bodies of 46-year-old Savvas Savopoulos, his wife, their 10-year-old son and their maid were found slain last week inside their mansion, which had been set on fire.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A new government survey has found that over the past four years, schools across the U.S. have beefed up security measures with safety drills and parent notification systems. The National Center for Education Statistics says during that period schools reported an overall decrease in violent crime. But there were high-profile incidents, including the December 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
NEW YORK (AP) — Running a jail can be even more expensive than previously thought. A study by the New York-based nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice has examined all costs associated with operating local lockups beyond budget line items. And it has found that services provided by outside companies and agencies, such as inmate health care and funding employee benefits, aren't always included in a corrections department's budget. In Boulder County, Colorado, the annual jail budget is $14 million, but outside agencies spend another $4.6 million on the jails.
DETROIT (AP) — Whites are moving back to the American city that had come to epitomize white flight. Detroit is the latest major city to see an influx of whites who may not find the suburbs as alluring as their parents and grandparents did in the last half of the 20th century. Many are taking advantage of cheaper housing and incentives offered by some major employers. Estimates also show 88,000 white residents in 2013, compared to just under 76,000 three years earlier.
