SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') told reporters today at the end of the owners meetings in San Francisco that he will conduct the appeal of Tom Brady's suspension. Goodell made it clear by saying it was the job of the commissioner to protect the integrity of the game.
TORONTO (AP) — Mike Babcock is leaving the Detroit Red Wings to take over as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Babcock spent the last 10 seasons with Detroit where he continued a tradition of a consistent winner including a Stanley Cup championship in 2008. Babcock received permission from the Red Wings to speak with other teams. Toronto will send a third round draft choice to Detroit for signing Babcock.
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Goalie Andrew Hammond has a new three-year, $4.05 million contract with the Ottawa Senators. Hammond made his first NHL start at age 27 in January, then went 20-1-2 with a 1.79 goals-against average and .941 save percentage to lead the Senators on their run to the playoffs.
ATLANTA (AP) — The NBA's Eastern Conference final starts tonight in Atlanta. The best of seven series features the top two seeds in the conference in No. Atlanta and No. 2 Cleveland. Banged up Cavaliers guard Kyrie (KY'-ree) Irving, who has been dealing with a bad knee and ankle, says he feels much better after having almost a week off since the end of the semifinal win over Chicago.
HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel (KY'-kuhl) earned his eighth straight win to improve to 6-0 this season as Houston topped Oakland 6-1. He allowed six hits and no earned runs in seven innings to lower his ERA to 1.67. Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer.
