BALTIMORE (AP) — The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, takes place today (6:20 p.m. Eastern) at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore with isolated thunderstorms in the forecast. Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah is the odds-on, 4-to-5 morning line favorite against seven other three-year-olds going a mile and three-13ths.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL's Eastern Conference final gets under way today at Madison Square Garden, where the defending East champion Rangers host the Tampa Bay Lightning (1 p.m. Eastern). The Rangers are coming off a seven-game series against Washington in which all games were decided by one goal while the Lightning eliminated Montreal in six games.
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR's Sprint All-Star Race is tonight with its unique format of 110 laps for 165 miles. It's done in four 25-lap segments and a 10-lap finale with only green-flag laps counting in the last segment. Jamie McMurray is the defending All-Star champion.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The first day of qualifying for the Indy 500 is today at the Brickyard. Speeds are now increasing again, and some believe the pole-winner will top 233 miles per hour.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Kevin Sutherland and Jeff Maggert start third-round play at the Regions Tradition with a one-shot lead over Michael Allen in the Champions Tour event in Alabama. Defending champion Kenny Perry had a 69 to join Bernhard Langer and Fred Funk five shots back of the co-leaders.
