BOSTON (AP) — The federal jury that sentenced Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) to death agreed with the prosecution on 11 of the 12 aggravating factors indicating that the death penalty should be imposed. Those factors included the cruelty of the crime, the extent of the carnage, the killing of a child, and Tsarnaev's lack of remorse. A lengthy appeals process is expected.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The latest question about the Amtrak derailment that killed eight people is on the FBI will try to answer. At a National Transportation Safety Board briefing yesterday, officials said the bureau has been called in to investigate the possibility that the windshield of an Amtrak train was hit with an object shortly before the train derailed.
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Days of intense searching in the mountains northeast of Nepal's capital have ended with the recovery of the bodies of all eight people on board the U.S. Marine helicopter that crashed this week during an earthquake relief mission. The wreckage of the UH-1 "Huey" was found yesterday. It carried six Marines and two Nepali soldiers.
BEIJING (AP) — Beijing has politely but pointedly rejected efforts to convince it to reduce tensions in disputed areas of the South China Sea. China and the U.S. are each standing firm amid deep disagreements over increasingly assertive Chinese activity in the region. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met China's foreign minister in Beijing and both men stressed the importance of dialogue.
SWEET BRIAR, Va. (AP) — It's a bittersweet ending to the academic year at Sweet Briar College, a tiny women's school on the eastern slope of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Today's commencement will mark the closure of the school amid anger and finger-pointing over the state of the Sweet Briar's finances. The school sites declining enrollment, rising tuition, debt and an endowment that is largely restricted.
