RENO, Nev. (AP) — The judge in a murder trial for an elderly Sparks man who killed an unarmed trespasser has granted the prosecution's request to block testimony from an expert who says Wayne Burgarello is suffering from a stroke-induced mental disability. The 74-year-old retired school teacher claims he was acting in self-defense last year when he fatally shot Cody Devine and seriously wounded Janai Wilson in an abandoned duplex he owns. The trial starts Monday.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police are seeking a suspect in the shooting death of a man found near a sidewalk east of Nellis Air Force Base. Las Vegas police said today they found the man late last night. Investigators believe the man was walking in the area when he was shot. Police say the man later died at UMC Trauma.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A measure that would have raised Nevada's minimum wage to $9 an hour has been amended to change how overtime hours are calculated. The Assembly Commerce and Labor committee amended and approved the bill on a party-line vote today, with Democrats opposing. It now moves to the full Assembly for a vote. Assembly Majority Leader Paul Anderson said he'd work with Democrats to reach a consensus on the bill.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are facing yet another legislative deadline that could seal the fate of several high-profile bills. Most bills that are still in play have already passed out of the Assembly or Senate, depending on where they were introduced. The bills must pass from a committee in the other house by today to stay alive.
