MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana sheriff has died a week after having shoulder surgery.
Delaware County Sheriff Mike Scroggins died Friday morning in Elyria, Ohio, at the home of a woman he had been dating.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Jason Walker tells The (Muncie) Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1RPHUvy ) Scroggins awoke, fell and died shortly thereafter. He says Scroggins had "major shoulder surgery" at an Ohio hospital on May 8.
The 52-year-old Scroggins had a history of health problems, including multiple back surgeries.
Scroggins had been a law enforcement officer for nearly 30 years. A Democrat, he was elected sheriff in 2010.
The Democratic Party will hold a caucus to select someone to fill the remaining 3½ years of Scroggins' second term.
