CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Legislature has approved a measure increasing room taxes on hotels outside of downtown Reno.
Assembly members voted 31-11 on Thursday to approve SB312. The bill was approved by the Senate in April.
The measure is sponsored by Republican Sen. Ben Kieckhefer and would levy a $2 per night tax on rooms rented in hotel-casinos outside of downtown Reno. It would also increase room taxes by $1 for downtown Reno hotel and casinos.
All funds collected from the bill would go to the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, which is charged with creating a new marketing plan to attract tourists to Reno.
Republican Assemblywoman Michele Fiore voted against the bill and said it violated her pledge to not increase taxes.
