JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed two more draft picks, getting deals done with safety James Sample and receiver Neal Sterling.
Both signed their rookie contracts Wednesday, one day after first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr. The Jaguars have five players left unsigned.
Sample was a fourth-round pick, the 104th overall selection. Sterling was a seventh-rounder, going 220th overall.
Sample will compete for the starting free safety job with free-agent addition Sergio Brown. Sample began his college career at Washington, transferred to American River College and played his final season at Louisville. He started 13 games last season, leading the team with 90 tackles and ranking second with four interceptions.
Sterling had 212 receptions for 2,615 yards and 22 touchdowns at Monmouth. He was a first-team All-Big South selection as a senior, finishing with 55 catches for 905 yards and six touchdowns.
The New Jersey native might have a tough time making Jacksonville's opening-day roster since the team has drafted six receivers over the last three years.
Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns and rookie Rashad Greene are considered locks. That leaves Sterling, Ace Sanders and half a dozen others vying for the last spot or two.
