MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says 23 schools across the state have been helping to hatch and raise small trout that will be released into the state's waterways.
The schools work on the project of Fish and Wildlife and the Vermont chapter of Trout Unlimited.
The third grade of the Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury was one of the classes that participated this year. Teacher Steve Flint says the students spent a month ensuring their aquariums are working properly before the eggs are delivered from the hatchery.
Flint says the students learn about a variety of environmental topics, including fish habitat and food, different types of insects and bird habitat.
The trout raised by the third graders will be released in the Middlebury River.
