BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An addiction treatment organization in Bismarck is embarking on a $2 million expansion of a facility it recently purchased.

The Heartview Foundation is adding a second floor to the former Kramer Agency building, which it purchased for $1 million in December, the Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/1dRJNIs ) reported. The expansion will double the amount of building space in the 7,000 square foot facility and increase patient treatment services by 50 percent.

Executive director Kurt Snyder said in-patient beds will increase from 12 to 16 and will be moved from the main floor to the second floor of the new building, allowing staff to have more office space and room for outpatient services on the main floor.

Having the in-patient area on the top floor will improve safety, privacy and needed control for those who need a more secure environment while recovering during a 30-day stay, Snyder said. He added that the expansion also will give the 45-member staff more room to counsel patients and allow the Heartview Foundation to hire additional staff.

"We have people using closets now," he said.

Snyder said the demand for addiction treatment has risen along with North Dakota's recent growth, especially lately with oil workers being laid off.

The program has treated 26,000 people for addiction issues in the past 50 years.
