TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) — Michelle Obama has invoked the storied history of Tuskegee University as she urged new graduates to soar to their futures. The first lady gave the commencement address today at the historically black university in Alabama. Obama told the 500 graduates that that the defining story of Tuskegee is one of rising hopes for all African Americans.
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry says the country has seen "gross incompetence" from the Obama administration. And he told a gathering of conservative activists in South Carolina that "we're not going to take it anymore." Perry's criticisms included the Affordable Care Act, foreign policy and the federal budget and the government's failure to secure the border. He's one of almost a dozen potential or declared Republican presidential candidates addressing the Citizens United Freedom Summit in Greenville today.
MADRID (AP) — Britain's Ministry of Defense says it is suspending the use of the Airbus A400M after one of the planes crashed today in Spain, killing four crew members and injuring two seriously. Spanish officials say the brand-new military transport plane was undergoing flight trials at the airport. Seville is the final assembly point for the A400M, an aircraft that has been orderd by more than 190 countries to replace their aging Hercules fleets.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says a pilot's failure to stay clear of power lines contributed to the crash of a hot air balloon last year in Virginia that killed him and two passengers. The balloon struck power lines and caught fire a year ago today ahead of a festival in Doswell about 25 miles north of Richmond.
UNDATED (AP) — Much of the country is facing a threat of severe weather today -- ranging from heavy rain to high winds to snow. Forecasters say tornadoes are possible in parts of western Kansas, western Colorado, and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles. Flooding is a concern in Oklahoma and northern Colorado. And winter storm warnings have been issued in Colorado, Wyoming and parts of western Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota.
