BERLIN (AP) — The German military says it has rescued some 430 migrants in the Mediterranean in its first mission there that comes among stepped-up European Union efforts.

The dpa news agency reported Friday that the frigate Hessen rescued 250 people who had been aboard a wooden boat that was in danger of sinking some 50 kilometers (30 miles) off the Libyan coast. Separately, its other vessel in the area, the combat support ship Berlin, picked up some 180 people in an operation some 70 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of the Tripoli.

The defense ministry says the refugees are likely to be taken to an Italian harbor.
